An FDA advisory panel approved with a 13-2 vote Benlysta as a lupus cure, the initial drug to treat lupus in over half of a century. Setting December 9 as a deadline for a final decision on the drug, Benlysta is not expected to present relief to everybody with the debilitating disease, but to allow benefits for some and allow them to taper off existing drugs, which have powerful side effects, sometimes as bad as the illness itself. Approval by an advisory panel does not make it official, having said that in most cases the FDA will stand by the panels decision.
